This thread is to help noobs get started off on the right foot. Feel free to pitch in whatever info you think will help!
1. Eve Mission Reports is a treasure trove of information. With everything from tips on blitzing to exact NPC spawns, this is a huge time saver. Also, EFT, the LP store database, and grismar's are also very handy. Just load in the right damage profile and min/max away!
2. Don't run for Caldari corps. 90% of all noobs pick caldari as their first char and run for caldari navy. This means their LP store is flooded and thus pays much less than others. In addition, popular caldari mission hubs are 1) camped with suicide gankers and ninja looters and 2) are crowded, meaning you have to travel a lot more wasting your time/money. Its just terrible, and the sooner you leave caldari space the better.
3. Within each faction, there are a few types of corps. First is basic combat corp (caldari navy, caldari police force, and so on). These have the most basic LP store, and thus the most crappy store. Avoid them. Next there are corps that offer 1+ unique blueprint. These are the real money makers -- find a corp that lets you earn 5x gyrostabs for the price of 3 or whatever and run it to death.
4. LP rewards are key to your earning power. Invest in taking the social skills to 4, and also research and find a good agent in a 0.5 system if you can. This will GREATLY increase your pay.
5. Salvaging is completely optional. Some do it because they want the minerals for their own use, others skip it and blitz to try and earn more money. Both work, and pick whichever you prefer.
6. You can buy a lot of the mission requirements on the market for next to nothing, saving you the hassle of looting them. Kernite (materials for war), Reports (stop the thief), and others come to mind.
7. You can get a huge increase in your effective dps/tank by using skill hardwirings, mission specific hardeners, tracking enhancers, rigor rigs, and target painters. Its not all about EFT stats -- tailor it to what actually works and watch your profits zoom!
8. Many ships are viable in PvE. However, caldari ships are much easier to use as noobs because missiles take a lower SP investment to be effective (fewer prereqs, easier to get into t2, support skills are less critical to max) and caldari has a great tank. Top notch PvE ships include: Golem, CNR, Raven, Tengu, Nightmare, Paladin, Machariel, Vargyr, Dominix. Any of these can easily get you where you want to go, so pick the flavor you enjoy.
9. 70+ million an hour is not only possible, its easy. Its simply a function of getting a good agent (ideally 4/18+ in a 0.5 system with 4/4/4+ social skills -- this will pay you 8k+ LP per mission) plus a good LP store (ideally one of those BPs that are for popular items paying 1500+ LP an hour plus a char that can put out very high DPS (700+). Get those three lined up and you can with ease earn 70 mil an hour, even without massive Sp or faction fit gear.
10. Low sec is a lot less dangerous than people believe. While 0.0 is deadly imo (due to bubbles and corps claiming the space), a careful and properly fit low sec mission runner is nearly 100% safe and can earn a lot more money. Its not for everyone, but the risk is a lot lower than people act like.
Enjoy!
